Oh, if you are interested in music, which you obviously must be since you are taking time to read this AMAZING site, check out the movie "Once". I think you'll be plesantly surprised at how great it is. The music is by Glen Hansard (The Frames) & Marketa Irglova, who travel, record, perform under the name The Swell Season. I heard them at ACL and was really impressed. Notice that I said I HEARD them and I didn't SEE them. From the photo below, I think you'll understand why I made the distinction.

Brave Citizens http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=70
Anywho, over the weekend Brave Citizens announced that they are finally doing a cross country tour, which kicks off in Arizona on January 18th. They have 4 Texas dates scheduled -

Jan 31 2009 Zeppelin’s Underground El Paso, Texas
Feb 1 2009 Rock Bottom San Antonio, Texas
Feb 3 2009 Clementine Coffee Bar Austin, Texas
Feb 4 2009 Bohemeo’s Houston, Texas

And to top that, the band's music is going to be featured on MTV! No, that's not a joke... While their may be no music VIDEOS on Music Television, you can still hear some great up-and-coming acts during the hours and hours of reality TV programming. Tune into the season premiere of The Real World: Brooklyn this WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7 @ 10:00PM on MTV and listen for the song "How Much Longer?", which will be featured on the show.

If you haven't checked out the interview we did with the band, you can head over to the podcast page. Andrew and Adam even gave us a bonus look at each track on their phenomenal release, Revolutions EP in their bonus podcast.

All that being said, we've found some good news to tide you over in the meantime. A few weeks ago, we told you about the Thrice's new Live at the HOB CD/DVD that hits stores. Well it looks like that will have to tide their fans over for some time. Lead singer Dustin Kensrue will be out on the road playing some special shows over the next 2 months, giving Ed, Riley and Teppei some much deserved downtime.

Kensrue is scheduled to take part in To Write Love on Her Arms charity show, Heavy and Light, on January 11th in Orlando alongside Jon Foreman (Switchfoot), Aaron Gillespie (The Almost/Underoath) and Anthony Raneri(Bayside).

And starting January 21st, Kensrue and Raneri will join Matt Pryor (Get Up Kids) and Chris Conley (Saves the Day) on the cleverly titled "Where's the Band?" tour which runs through February.

But fear not loyal Thricean's, Vagrant Records is set to release the band's latest project "The Alchemy Index" on Vinyl in February. According to the label, "Each of the 4 EP’s will be pressed on 10” colored vinyl - the Fire EP is red, Water is blue, Earth is brown and Air is on clear vinyl. The discs will be inside a hand-bound hardcover book complete with lyrics, liner notes and commentary from the band." Box sets are scheduled to ship on/before February 17th and you can pre-order now at store.vagrant.com.

And as if that weren't enough, Thrice just signed on for this year's Warped Tour along with Senses Fail, Silverstein, Bayside and Underoath.

Whew....that's a lot of news...here are some videos for you to enjoy while you process it all!

Thrice - "Firebreather" (Live at the HOB CD/DVD)
(PS: The extra people on stage include members of the bands Circa Survive and Pelican, who accompanied Thrice on the entire tour. Also making a cameo are members of two of our favorite up and coming bands, Aushua & Eye Alaska. Dustin's younger brother, Eye Alaska guitarist Chase Kensrue, is the one standing to his left...just FYI.)

She (Zooey Deschanel) & Him (Ben Gibbard http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=67
According to sources the two have been an item for about a year and decided to make it official. Apparently Zooey was "swept off her feet" and Ben is "so excited". Now, I've followed Ben's career for quite some time and I've never ever ever seen him excited about ANYTHING...which makes me think that this might actually be the real thing. If it is, we

If it's false, kudos to whoever thought of pairing these two together...They seem perfect for each other.

Most people remember Deschanel as Will Ferrell's singing counterpart in "Elf" but if you have never seen Zooey in Almost Famous (This song explains why I'm leaving home to become a stewardess.) and Failure to Launch (Yeah, everyone from work went to T.G.I. Friday's, but I don't really like that place...Or anyone I work with).....go rent/buy/watch them immediatly! They are really great.

If you don't own all of the albums on this list, I HIGHLY recommend each and every one of them. They are complete from start to finish and worth every penny.

*"Independent" music is a loose term, seeing as how many major labels have recently seen how profitable "Indie" labels are and have begun buying them up. We think this is a good list of albums that haven't received the mainstream attention that they deserve...possibly with the exception of Death Cab...but I just couldn't leave them off the list :)]]>

The Great Steak War of 2008 http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=60
The terms of the bet are as follows...If I get more votes that Frito, then he has to eat a steak, with ketchup...in public. If I lose...then in some tiny way...we all lose and my right to put ketchup on a steak will be suspended and I will be forced to eat a condiment-free steak and hear Frito gloat. Alli is the official "Steak Bet Commissioner" and she will be making the final call on Morning Candy later this week. So here, without further ado, is my Freedom Manifesto.

"I, Emo Sarah, have always had a certain affinity for the delicious condiment we know as ketchup. I believe that there are very few food items that this delicious nectar can't enhance the flavor of..(mainly dairy products, sushi, and green vegetables.)

Being an American citizen has afforded me the opportunity to flavor food in whatever way I see fit and I believe that this same should hold true for others. I believe in equality...I believe in freedom..."I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone...I believe there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter"....Ok so that last part is a quote from a movie, but that doesn't mean I feel any less strongly about the subject matter.

Look at it this way. I feel strongly that the best way to cook a steak is medium-well. But just because I FEEL that is the best way, doesn't mean it is. It is an opinion, a preference. I am not passing judgment on the chef that prepares my steak, Frito, or anyone else. I am merely stating that, for me and my taste buds, I prefer a steak with condiments.

So friends, if you believe in all of those things that make this country great, I ask that you cast your vote for freedom, the American way, and for our ability to enjoy a steak in any way we see fit.

A post on Kensrue's myspace says, "I've been wanting to do a Christmas record since before I even thought about putting Please Come Home together. I've always loved Christmas songs and searching out different versions of my favorite songs, so it was about time to try my hand at it."

Depending on what version of Kensrue's debut album you have, you may have already heard a few of his Christmas covers. While the new album consists of mostly older songs, there are 2 new tracks as well.

Here's the track listing of what you have to look forward to.

"This Good Night Is Still Everywhere"

1. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
2. Christmas Blues
3. Blue Christmas
4. Fairytale of New York
5. This Good Night Is Still Everywhere
6. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
7. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
8. God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen
9. O Holy Night
10. This Is War

To help get you in the spirit, here's a video of Kensrue singing Christmas songs alongside Brand New and mewithoutyou front men, Jesse Lacey and Aaron Weiss, last December. The backstory for this impromptu performance was that their show got cancelled but they still played a few songs for their fans...in 15 degree weather. Enjoy!

Just wanted to let you know about something amazing that is happening right now! As many of you may know, Snow Patrol just released their new album, "A Hundred Million Suns" yesterday here in the States.

Well, you can go to Amazon.com right now and download the entire album for only $3.99! That's cheaper than a fancy drink from your favorite chain coffee shop (MMMM...Peppermint Mocha).

Snow Patrol is the best thing to come out of Ireland since Guinness and St. Paddy's Day and the new album is really among the best work they've released.

I couldn't find a decent version of the first single off "A Hundred Million Suns" but here's the next best thing. Here are 2 versions of "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" featuring Martha Wainwright. Take note of how close the live vocal performance is to the album version, it's uncanny.

Now hear this - "Decode" by Paramore http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=53
Anywho, there has been a lot of talk and fanfare over the film's soundtrack, which is slated to hit record stores and downloading sites on November 4th. Here's what the official tracklist:

1. Supermassive Black Hole (Muse)
2. Decode (Paramore)
3. Full Moon (The Black Ghosts)
4. Leave Out All The Rest (Linkin Park)
5. Spotlight(Twilight Mix) (MuteMath)
6. Go All The Way(Into The Twilight) (Perry Farrell)
7. Tremble For My Beloved (Collective Soul)
8. I Caught Myself (Paramore)
9. Eyes On Fire (Blue Foundation)
10. Never Think (Rob Pattinson)
11. Flightless Bird, American Mouth (Iron & Wine)
12. Bella's Lullaby (Carter Burwell)

From what I can tell, the two most eagerly awaited songs on this soundtrack come courtesy of Franklin, Tennessee natives Paramore. I finally heard the full version of "Decode" today and I have to say that I was impressed. Don't get me wrong, they aren't breaking any new ground with this track but it's definitly more rock and less pop, not unlike the band's first album, "All We Know is Falling".

And this isn't Paramore's first foray into movie soundtracks either. If you have never heard the band's cover of Foo Fighters' "My Hero" from the Sounds of Superman album (The soundtrack from "Superman Returns") then you are missing out.

Obviously this isn't the official video for "Decode" but it gets the point across. Enjoy!

Thrice is releasing a new 3 Disc Special edition entitled "Live at The House of Blues". It will include a DVD with with over 2 hours of live footage and interviews as well as 2 CD's featuring their entire 25 song set at the HOB in Anaheim, California.

Let me go out on a limb and say that if their set list is anything like what the band performed earlier this year at The Palladium in Dallas, then it is well worth whatever they are charging.

The 3 Disc set will hit stores on December 9th, just in time for holiday shopping.

So here is some info that I feel obliged to share with you all. Some of it you may know, some of it you might not, but either way it is all exciting.

*Bloc Party is set to release their new album "Intimacy" here in the States next week. According to a few early reviews, the band has chosen to split the difference between 2005's Silent Alarm and last year's A Weekend in the City, two albums which were very diverse. So it looks as if there is something for every Bloc Party fan on this new record. (The band has posted a video and a few new tracks on their myspace...myspace.com/blocparty)

Bloc Party - "This Modern Love" Live at Electric Proms

*The Sundance Channel's hit show "Live From Abbey Road" is coming to DVD November 11th. The Best of Season One compilation will be a 2 Disc set with extended artist interviews featuring Damien Rice (my favorite performer this far), The Kooks, Dave Matthews, Ray Lamontagne, Iron Maiden, Kasabian and many more. I'm sure my DVR will be happy to have the extra space back!

Damien Rice & Lisa Hannigan - "Volcano" (I wanted to post their performance of "Rootless Tree", but it's not appropriate for any youngin's)

*The new Keane album was released last week and I have to marvel at the change this band has made over their last three albums. Being emo means that I was inherently programmed to love their ballad-filled debut "Hope and Fears". But then something amazing happened with 2006's "Under the Iron Sea"...the band found a HOOK, and a great one at that (See: "Is It Any Wonder?"). And now the new album "Perfect Symmetry" is, dare I say, FUN! It's got a variety of sounds that span genres and I for one and happy with the direction the British three-some is taking. Oh, and normally I don't think "Deluxe Edition" cd's a worth the extra money, but do yourself a favor get the extended edition of "Perfect Symmetry". Totally worth it.

Keane - "The Lovers are Losing"

ACL Wrap-Up Part Two http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=48

"As a music lover living in Texas it is always a must to make a voyage to the state capital of Austin. Aside from claiming the title of “Live Music Capital of the World” Austin boasts some of the best venues for music. From Stubbs to 6th listening to music in Austin is always an experience. Zilker Park is one of those unique places; about this time every year people from all over the country come to this town to hear some of the best musicians and bands in the industry play here. Austin City Limits Music Festival 2008 stood out from the years past. ACL Fest features a variety of bands from all over and from every genre possible.

This wonderful and musical voyage started off for me on Friday when some of the best shows started off the day. As always Asleep at the Wheel kicked off this year ACL. Which I caught part of, as my girlfriend and I posted up for the buffet of musicians and bands before us. We started off by listening to an up and coming band called What Made Milwaukee Famous followed by Vampire Weekend, which are two of my favorite bands. Shifting stages we ventured past a plethora of sounds and ended up checking out a unique type of band oddly named Gogol Bodello. Following the “gypsy-punk” meets death metal experience my lady and I headed over to Hot Chip. The techno vibe received was just a taste of the music to come which came from N.E.R.D. N.E.R.D. is a group I have always been curious about and their show started off with some old classics from their first album which we all remember. The performance from Pharrell and gang progressed into was an on stage scene that brought the crowd to a different level. Once the fifty or so chicks, brought stage by Pharrell, were cleared out off the stage, The Swell Season began to play followed by Mars Volta. Volta came out to Zilker with all guns blazing as they helped close down my first day at ACL.

Saturday at ACL is always the most demanding due to the overwhelming range of bands throughout the day. Our day started off with yet another of this year’s underdogs, a band called The Black and White Years. Despite there thirty minute set, they rocked out Austin Ventures stage and kicked off the day with a bang. Their set ranks among the some of the most legendary shows I have ever experienced at ACL. They now join the ranks in and among such ACL acts as Kings of Leon, Explosions in the Sky, Gnarls Barkley (which was my first real up-close ACL performance), My Morning Jacket and Ben Kweller. As the day progressed we opened our ear up to some pretty amazing sounds. We got to hear Brit-band trio of brothers called The Fratellis. The down South country rhymes of the Drive-By Truckers followed by the crazy sounds of Man-Man. Saturday evening got kicked off by the easy techno listening from MGMT. John Fogerty followed up on the next stage over with every great CCR hit songs you could imagine. The close of the night brought much sadness to me when The Black Keys took the stage. I love the Black Keys but for some reason the volume got kicked down a notch or five and I was sadly unable to fully listen to their performance. I fought through the sadness and split the rest of my night between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and Beck. With two Chicken Cones (if you have ever had had one you understand why Chicken Cones rule) and a Sweet Leaf in safely tucked away in my backpack I departed ACL to ponder what other wondrous sound I could partake in the next day.

Sunday at ACL for me has always been a bit more laid back but this year proved more trying. Aside from fighting a continuous sneezing fits and a cloudless day we fought through it all to indulge in some of the most memorable performances of while in attendance of ACL. The day was kicked off with a hefty portion of Stubb’s BBQ to cure the now exhausted state of being out in the sun for two days straight. Octopus Project, which I have heard about from somewhere I just can’t place it, played a good set and followed up by a hard rock dose of Against Me! Which was followed by a pleasing performance by one of my new favorite called Okkervil River but fighting every urge to stay we left early to listen to the tail end of Blues Traveller which rocked out. Who doesn’t love the harmonic sounds of John Popper going to town on the harmonica? We posted up for an up close and personal performance from this year’s most memorable show which was from Band of Horses. The stage present from BOH was incredible and everything you could ask for in an ACL performance. I liked the fact that BOH played their hearts out and that they had enough time to play some of their new stuff. The grand finale for ACL this year was the Foo Fighters final performance as a band before they go on said “indefinite hiatus”. Dave Grohl put on an amazing last show and brought this years’ Austin City Limits to a close.

Whether it was the last full concert from the Foo Fighters or an amazing showing from this year’s newest artists, ACL Music Festival has come and gone. Sadly I will lay in wait until rumors begin to surface about next year’s lineup or I can get my hands onto another infamous Chicken Cone from Hudson’s."

ACL Wrap-Up Part One http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=47
In my opinion, this year's festival brought together some of the best musicians in the industry today. If you missed out on the festival, ITUNES will have exclusive tracks from this year's festival available for download, starting in November.

Thanks to our friends over at Global Event Group, I got to witness the behind the scences side of ACL, which was truly a once in a lifetime experience...to stand just a few inches away from artists like Erykah Badu, Against Me & Silversun Pickups was exciting for a self-proclaimed music buff like myself. Getting to watch sets from the side of the stage...to stand in the front row for some off your all-time favorites...to catch sets from tomorrow's next big band before they get the mainstream attention that they deserve...All of the things are the reason why ACL is on it's way to becoming on of the premier festivals in the nation.

For me personally, the highlights of the festival were as follows:

Friday:
Best Performance: N.E.R.D.
Best Sound: The Mars Volta
Artist/Band I want to hear more from: Jenny Lewis/Jamie Lidell
Set that I was most bummed to miss: Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels

Saturday:
Best Performance: Electric Touch
Best Sound: Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band
Artist/Band I want to hear more from: Mason Jennings
Set that I was most bummed to miss: Allson Krauss & Robert Plant

Sunday:
Best Performance: Foo Fighters
Best Sound: The Raconteurs
Artist/Band I want to hear more from: Colour Revolt
Set that I was most bummed to miss: Stars/Band of Horses

The weekend was unbelievable in and of itself, but most importantly it afforded me the opportunity to be within 4 feet of Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters.

While I won't say I am "obsessed" with the band, I will say that I have a deep appreciation for their music. I don't know if I will ever see another band come along that matches their song/music writing abilities, incendiary live performances and their pension for always pushing the envelope.

Sadly, I have to report that the rumors that have been circulating about the Foo's "indefinite hiatus" are in fact true. Last night was their last full show before taking a leave of absence to spend time with their families and pursue other endeavors. There is no certain time frame for this break (We've heard everything from 3-10 years) but this could result in many positive outcomes.

New music from Dave and Probot??? A follow-up album from Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders??? Foo Fighters "Best Of" Collection???

Only time will tell but one thing is for certain. If that was the last time we see the Foo Fighters play live for awhile, it was definitly one hell of a send-off.

The band performed their latest hits from last year's "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" as well as fan favorites from their previous 5 albums...a few of which were reworked for their live semi-acoustic DVD Skin and Bones. They were joined by honorary Foo's Rami Jaffe, Jessy Greene, Drew Hester (who gave the best triangle solo of all-time!) and their original guitarist, the one and only, Pat Smear.

I believe that they are the last true rockstars, in the very best sense of the word. They are larger than life while still maintaining a sense of likeability, something not seen much in music these days. I leave you with some of the best live performances I could find from Dave, Taylor, Chris, Nate (and sometimes Pat :)

I would go into further details, but I don't feel like I can recount all of the AMAZING artists that I saw today in my current state of exhaustion. However, I wanted to check in with you guys and let you know that there are still a few passes available for Sunday (Foo Fighters, Flyleaf, Tegan and Sara, Stars, Gnarls Barkley, & The Racounteurs are all playing!). Check out www.aclfestival.com for more information.

I promise I will write more later this weekend. For now, I will leave you with a video from one of today's stand out artists: N.E.R.D.

You can head over to myspace.com/copeland and check out the first song they have posted called "The Grey Man"...It's more of what you have come to know and love from their last album, "Eat, Sleep, & Repeat".

If you are unfamiliar with Copeland, here are the tracks I would suggest to get you caught up.

Album: BENEATH MEDICINE TREE
Tracks: "California", "Testing the Strong Ones" & "She Changes Your Mind"

Album: IN MOTION
Tracks: "You Have My Attention", "No One Really Wins", & "Love is a Fast Song"

Ok everyone, sorry for the delay in updating the site, but we are in the midst of some exciting changes that I have been pretty vague about...until now.

We here at EmoSarah.com love music, plain and simple. We try our hardest to give you new music, artist interviews, concert dates and ticket information and even a pretty broad venues list to make it easy for you to find some great new music across the state...but I feel like we can do more.

In just a few weeks, we are going to start giving away tickets to some of the best tours coming to Texas, featuring artists that we spotlight here on the site. And all you have to do to win is listen to aggielandsrock.com, our new rock station and keep checking into EmoSarah.com. It's that simple.

I am so excited to announce our first ticket giveaway, which will start later this month so keep checking the blog...I may be dropping a few hints here and there.

Also, keep your eyes out for our new photo gallery which will feature all our pictures from Northgate Music Festival and last week's Electric Touch show.

Today I leave you with the trailer for my new favorite album "Lost in the Sound of Separation" by Underoath..which hit stores YESTERDAY!

NGMF Wrap Up Part 1 Ft. Lance Armstrong http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=41
-NGMF as experienced by Matt Young-

"Although the tail end of summer is typically “music fest season”, Northgate Music Fest 2008 came about 3 months late this year. In the past, to my chagrin, the “end of the school festival” has typically showcased more than a few different types of Country music. Maybe it was the three extra months of planning, or maybe it was the particularly dry summer that plagued the majority of Texas…whatever it was…This year was the best North Gate Music Fest I have ever experienced!

Not only did NGMF manage to snag 90’s rock legends The Toadies as the headliner, they also brought a relevant, diverse lineup. Major acts included The Orange, As Cities Burn, Band Of Heathens, What Made Milwaukee Famous, Cruiserweight, Deas Vail, and Radiohead (just kidding). Along with the festival (but not affiliated) came extra shows at First United Methodist Church and the Baptist Student Ministry which included Wesley Taylor, Chad Perez Band, and The Kornegay Family Band. Since I am merely a mortal, single soul bearing man, I was only able to see 8 bands in the two days (excluding the bands in which I caught the first or last few songs of their set).

Friday evening began with Clairmont at Zapatos. The last time I saw Clairmont, they had just lost a guitarist, and were performing as a trio. Clairmont’s new cd, “Strength Like Lions”, is riddled with little leads and extra melodies performed with two guitars. The last way that rich, melodic music should be performed is lacking a crucial instrument. Luckily, Clairmont recently tacked on a second guitarist. Their live show was much improved, and the entire crowd’s attention was glued to the stage for the entirety of their set! (http://www.myspace.com/clairmont)

After Clairmont, I zoomed over to the main stage to see what all the hype surrounding What Made Milwaukee Famous was all about. No exaggeration, I was blown away. I really don’t know much of their music…at all, yet I found myself on the edge of my figurative seat the entire show. What I really loved about them is how they don’t play to a specific genre. Their music is reminiscent of everything from country to the trend in indie rock, to classic rock. Aside from the great music, their stage presence was entertaining just in itself. In my opinion, the BEST stage presence (as I’ve said before) isn’t doing the “right moves” or flinging your guitar around, but its simply having fun. You can tell when a band is having fun – they are funny, relaxed and smiling the entire time…which is exactly what WMMF does! (http://www.myspace.com/whatmademilwaukeefamous)

My biggest surprise of the night came with the last band that played Zapatos on Friday: Alpha Rev. With vocals reminiscent of Chris Martin, and the dynamics and vocal melodies of Sigur Ros, Alpha Rev is not your typical jam band. Often times, I get bored with a band if I’m not familiar with their music. Honestly, I enjoyed Alpha Rev’s set in its entirety. In fact, I enjoyed almost every band I saw all the way to their last song…especially the bands I had never listened to before! (http://www.myspace.com/alpharev)

After a drunk driver told me a “get off the road” on my bike ride home, I rested up for my four-hour meeting the next morning (afternoon, rather). As you can imagine, I was ready to hang out and listen to music Saturday night. A new feature at Northgate this year was the Acoustic Stage at Potbelly’s. I got the chance to catch the second half of Russell Huie’s set at about 7:00. I saw Russell play a CoffeeHouse concert at Rumour’s Café on TAMU campus last year, and thoroughly enjoyed his set. A Russell Huie acoustic show is always speckled with flawless covers ranging from Ray LaMontagne, to The Decemberists, to Weezer. He is from Bryan, so I suggest you catch his next show with his band! (http://www.myspace.com/russellhuie)

The Orange opened the Main Stage on Saturday night. Despite the small attendance (which included a quite amateur interpretive dancer…a hobbyist I assume) their performance was given as if the crowed was packed in like sardines. Words I would use to describe The Orange: Orange-y…Killers-esque…jolly good time. Their set really was entertaining, and I was glad to see the entire crowd bobbing heads and tapping their chucky t’s. Definitely a band I would recommend seeing live (or at least checking out their myspace/buying a cd). (www.myspace.com/theorangeband)

Later on in the night, I chilled at Zapato’s to watch Deas Vail and The Aviation Orange. Deas Vail was one of the best shows I saw all weekend. Their music sounds so full live that it’s hard to believe you are at a show. From the music I had heard before the show, they were spot on. Not only am I about to buy their CD, I am currently about to click the Safari button on by dock to navigate to their myspace and jam their tunes! Done. My best interpretation of their sound is a mix between Copeland’s “Eat, Sleep, Repeat”, Eisley, and Mae. Please…check them out! (www.myspace.com/deasvail)

The last band playing Northgate Music Fest at 1:15 in Schotzis, was Bryan/College Station’s own Atarimatt. Two TV’s, Two Atari consols, and Two dancing drunk hooligans later (who eventually started a dance party on stage), my mind was officially boggled. I don’t know how this guy is not huge right now. Not only is his music unique, but his live show is fascinating. His chilled out attitude on stage is definitely a plus. Another one of my strongest recommendations goes out to Atarimatt. (http://www.myspace.com/atarimatt listen to “Commuter” and “Space Squid Shakedown”)

All in all, Northgate Music Fest was phenomenal. My favorite acts (in no particular order) were What Made Milwaukee Famous, Deal Vail, and Atarimatt. How do I know NGMF was a success? It opened up TONS of peoples eyes and ears to new music, gave young listeners an opportunity to hear some older bands, and brought diversity to an area that is known for its lack of it. Kudos!"

-NGMF as experienced by Ashley Moore-

"Friday night at Potbelly was a good warm up for me, I believe. The Bryan/College Station music scene has been hibernating for some time and one seems to forget exactly how much potential our little city has. In all honesty, I had my doubts. It’s a feat to satiate one’s musical desires while also being a minor at Northgate, but I believe I accomplished that feat thanks to the beloved Northgate Music Fest. Although, that could very well be because As Cities Burn is mind-blowing…but ANYWAY.

Posted up at Potbelly with my phenomenal chicken salad sandwich, I witnessed every walk of life the Bryan/College Station has to offer, because apparently it’s the hop thing to grab a sandwich before you immerse yourself in music festival activities. I saw: long-lost friends, coworkers, ex-coworkers, family, dirty rocker boys, clean-cut rocker boys, and the ever popular “in between” rocker boys that always seem to get the most groupies. For real, people-watching at Potbelly was half the fun; though, I have to rant about Reagan Wilkins. Maybe I’m partial because of his cover of Sail Away by David Gray, but I know this much: he’s confident, and the boy can sing. He’s pretty young, talented, and showed absolutely no nervousness at all. As a performer I was amazed. I know how intimidating a large audience can be for a single performer. His confidence, musicality, and vocal quality made my Friday night worth it.

Saturday at the main stage (the other area minors are allowed) was definitely the highlight of my Northgate Music Fest experience. As Cities Burn is my muse, and after their set on Saturday night - they should be yours too. They opened powerfully with my personal favorite “Empire,” and never let off the throttle. My ears were captivated the entire time, but as with any 5’3” girl at a show I found myself behind the tallest human being who ever lived. (How he ended up in College Station is your guess. I think they know where to find me.) I wasn’t actually behind him, I guess I was more to his right…but then his equally tall friend came to chat. Yes, during the show. They also liked to stand with their hands on their hips. You know, elbows jutting out on either side? Well, it’s times like these that one gets to experience what’s wonderful about Aggieland. Being eye level with the spaces between their arms and bodies I was just going to settle with viewing the stage through the arms of these highly tall creatures, but the lovely Aggies around me kindly jostled their comfortable positions so that I could regain my full view of the stage. (Thanks guys! I owe you one!) Nothing could have ruined this performance for me. As Cities Burn is so consistent that their live sound is as perfect as their recordings. These boys from Baton Rouge, Louisiana showed me, for the first time, what a good performance is and why recording artists play live. I witnessed what they meant to impart upon me in their lyrics by seeing the expressions in their movements and on their faces. They weren’t worried about a finger slipping, or dropping a beat. They were confident, musical, and expressive. You could tell they believe in what they were singing and that they love what they do.

I can only pray Northgate Music Fest has affected someone else the way it affected me. I have high hopes for next year."

BATFEST IS COMING!

Batfest is an event that features music, art and other vendors that benefits the roughly 2 million bats that call the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge home (you know the bridge you cross when you drive from Stubbs to Magnolia Cafe after an awesome concert...Oh, Austin, how I love thee!) If you aren't sure if you want to support these bats...just think of how many insects they kill so you can go shopping on Guadalupe, enjoy a nice walk to Waterloo, or party on 6th Street without fear of a bug attack.

Still not enough incentive to make the drive to Austin? How about 30 bands including Flobots, Ludo, Mothers Anthem, Sounds Under Radio, The Feds and Alpha Rev....FOR ONLY $5!!!

Yes, admission to this years Batfest is only $5! This year marks the 4th Annual Batfest which will take place in Austin on Labor Day Weekend August 30th-31st and for more information check out www.roadwayevents.com]]>

Ward has been involved in 3 very different but very worthwhile music projects in his career: At the Drive-In, Sparta, & Sleepercar, yet has managed to escape the attention of other prolific genre-crossing artists.

If you don't own the following albums...go buy them...listen to them...and thank me later.

"Relationship of Command" by At the Drive-In
"Threes" by Sparta
"West Texas" by Sleepercar

After the split of At the Drive-In, Ward took the lead vocal duties for Sparta a band he formed with several of his ATDI compatriots. The band released an EP and a debut album before really finding their sound on 2006's "Threes", which happens to be one of the most complete albums to be released in the past 5 years.

In a recent interview with Jim Ward, it was stated that Sparta is "currently on hiatus and label-less", and that he will be focusing on his project, Sleepercar, which recently wrapped up a tour with City and Colour.

I leave you today with one of my all-time favorites from Mr. Ward and Sparta...this is "Taking Back Control".

The Story So Far - Thrice http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=27
Then in the summer of 2003, everything changed. That was the summer that I saw a music video from a band out of Southern California named Thrice, and I knew immediatly that this embodied everything I had ever wanted from rock music.

"All That's Left"

So then I went out and bought what I thought was their first album, "The Artist in the Ambulance" and it didn't leave my cd player for at least 3 months...and that's not an exaggeration. I think it's safe to say that I have listened to this next song thousands of time.

"Stare at the Sun"

For the next two years, I discovered that Thrice prior to "Artist..." was a much different band, but amazing still the same. From "The Illusion of Safety"...

"Deadbolt"

In Fall '05, Thrice released "Vheissu" which is a big departure from their last album, but one that showed neccessary growth. For me...it is the most perfectly crafted album that I have ever heard.

"The Image of the Invisible"

"Red Sky"

After Vheissu, lead singer Dustin Kensrue had an idea of a concept record that delved into the four elements. He also took the time to write and record a solo album. "Please Come Home" is a folk inspired examination of family, fame and faith. Kensrue followed the release with a short solo tour which merited much critical acclaim.

"Pistol"

During the process of self-recording their new album, Thrice parted ways with their label, Island, and eventually found a home at indie label Vagrant Records. In 2007, they released The Alchemy Index - Volumes 1 & 2: Water and Fire.

"Digital Sea"

In the Spring of '08, Thrice finished their concept record and released "The Alchemy Index - Volumes 3 & 4 - Air and Earth.

"Come All You Weary"

This week Thrice has released a set they performed for Myspace Transmissions. It includes both interviews and live performances of songs from "The Alchemy Index". To see all the interviews, check out www.myspace.com/transmissions.

"Daedalus"

Hopefully you have enjoyed a closer look at one of my all time favorite bands. I left out a bunch of EP's the band has put out that are outstanding, but I don't think I can fit everything in one post. If you want to know more about the band, check out www.myspace.com/thrice.]]>
"You Be The Judge" - Copeland http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=26
Back in late May, Copeland posted a bulletin on their myspace announcing that they were selling their trailer and van but that they had exciting news to share with their fans. It's been 2 months and still no word...so I got a little nostalgic this morning and started listening to some of their old albums which are some of my all-time favorites (Beneath Medicine Tree & In-Motion).

Since I have never had the chance to see them live, I decided that they were an obvious choice for "You Be The Judge".

"You Have My Attention" - Live at New Orleans House of Blues - Sept. 07

Favorite lyrics: "Say we'll make them say, That we've been down and out all day, If your education brings you home, Why are you still away?

"No More Room to Breathe"

]]>
Why so serious? http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=24
Case in point: at the end of X-Men 2 when every comic book and cartoon enthusiast flipped out because they realized that Jean Gray was going to return as The Phoenix. If you were unfamiliar with the story, you would never have picked up on that. But you can't hold that against the filmaker that is trying to tell a small part of a large story in just over 2 hours.

For everyone who hasn't had a chance to see The Dark Knight yet...my condolences because it is unbelievable.

Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker was outstanding. He was frightening, funny and intelligent. He was able to point out facts that other characters were unaware of. Don't get me wrong...he's definitely a bad guy....That's why they're called villians. But anyone that questions the quality of his performance needs to go rent "10 Things I Hate About You", "Brokeback Mountain" & then watch "The Dark Knight". Whether or not you like the role itself, his performances are always believable. No one can ever judge Ledger of not taking chances with his career and if he doesn't get an Oscar, there is something seriously wrong with the acting world.

In honor of my favorite film of 2008, I made a little playlist. (After you see the movie, a few of these choices will become a little more obvious.) And for the record, yes, I am this Type A when it comes to making playlists...it's kind of a sickness actually.

Batman VS The Joker
The Fashion - Like Knives

Batman
The Glass Ocean - Men Weren't Meant to Fly

The Joker
Alive in Wild Paint - God Gave me a Gun

Harvey Dent
Deftones - Change (In the House of Flies)

Bruce Wayne
Bloc Party - Song for Clay (Disappear Here)

Gotham City
Smashing Pumpkins - The Beginning is the End is the Beginning (and yes this was the song in the trailer for "Watchmen" & from the "Batman & Robin" soundtrack)

Lucius Fox
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Weapon of Choice

Rachel Dawes
Finch - What It Is To Burn

Jim Gordon
The Almost - Say This Sooner]]>

Musical Guilty Pleasures http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=20
So, you know those bands that you aren't "supposed" to like but you do anyways? The ones that it has be ingrained in your DNA that you will immediately forfeit any strand of credibility if you listen to them. Not to mention the fact that you are opening yourself up to public mockery and ridicule but for some unknown reason, you just connect with the music?

Well, I say forget the haters! If people were supposed to avoid these bands like the plague, then I highly doubt that they would sell millions of cd's. So in the interest of full disclosure...I present a small sampling of my musical guilty pleasures.

DISCLAIMER: While these are not in my normal, everyday playlists, I will NEVER change the radio when they come on.

Lifehouse - I love this particular song, but really anything they've ever done is alright by me. They may have the only cd that I have physically ever worn out.

Creed - Alright if my defense...I really only love the first cd, but I listened to them all...and if you are in your mid-late 20's, you did too. (PS Why does Scott Stapp always make a face like he smelled something bad?)

Sugarcult - Specifically this song but I am obsessed with the whole "Palm Trees and Power Lines" album.

HIM - I have an old roommate that is shaking her head somewhere because I am admitting this. Although something may be lost in translation with the lyrics, at least they were cool enough to have Kat Von D make a cameo in the video.

Hootie and the Blowfish - I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK! This is an excellent song from a phenomenal album!

Sister Hazel - Although this song is from an earlier album, I still listen to the "Fortress" cd on a regular basis.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Ok...so I HATED this song when it first came out...despite everyone trying to convince me otherwise. In this case, I was the one who was hating this band, especially this song. However, one day I heard the acoustic version of "Maps" and had to eat my words...(Shut it Ryan!)

"You Be The Judge"...Underoath http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=19
In an on-going effort to keep this from happening to you, we've decided to start a posting music videos/album versions of the song along with video of the band performing the song live. This can also give you a good idea of the band's stage presence and how their fans respond to them too.

Now I realize that everyone has different opinions on bands and what makes a "good" live show, so I am not here to offer my opinion on the matter...just to give you a chance to hear a live version and a album version of a song and let "you be the judge". (Get it...because the name...of the blog post is...sigh)

BAND: Underoath
SONG: Writing on the Walls

I was well on my way to being completly emo earlier today and hiding in my corner in the office, but luckily I have some awesome co-workers who came to cheer me up! (Which is a difficult task...cheering up the resident emo kid...)

So instead of writing a complaint blog...I've decided to make it an "almost happy" one.

So enjoy, the anthem of my day..."Pork and Beans" by Weezer.

To mosh or not to mosh.... http://www.emosarah.com/?entry=16

"After two years of Warped Tour-free-summers, I decided to make the drive to Houston to see some good ol’ fashion pop rock and hardcore. Although the normal aging that typically occurs during the span of two years affected me, it did not affect the target audience of Van’s Warped Tour. It’s amazing how much I forgot during those two years! I forgot how fun it is to be kicked in the head 20 times by crowd surfers while you are trying to enjoy the show. I also forgot about how nice it is getting punched in the face after being pushed into the circle pit that I was trying to stay out of in the first place. Either way, I decided it was time to give those pleasures up and try to do something COMPLETELY out of the question: Enjoy the bands!

Fortunately, Norma Jean, one of the main bands I wanted to see, played at 11:50 that morning; the exact time that I was finishing my huevos rancheros at the Taco Cabana 10 miles away from the festival. But after all, they’ve been playing together for 11 years. They definitely don’t deserve to be headliners!

Upon arrival, I caught Between The Trees at the Ernie Ball stage. If you have gotten the chance to listen to their debut album, The Story and The Song, you have pretty much already heard their live show. They are absolutely spot on. Even though they are gaining popularity fast, they seemed to have down to earth attitudes, sporting homemade t-shirts from adoring 13 year-old fans in the front row.

After Between The Trees, I hopped over to the main stage to try to get a good spot for Anberlin. I saw Anberlin a little over 3 years ago at the door in Dallas…they were sub-par. Needless to say, my expectations were low yesterday at Warped. Whatever they have been doing these past few years, it is definitely working. Just like Between The Trees, I felt like I was listening to their CD’s. Unlike many of the bands I’ve seen at warped tour, who play their hits from their latest CD, Anberlin played more songs from their 2005 release, Never Take Friendship Personal than any other album. Sadly, I didn’t get to enjoy “Paperthin Hymn” to it’s full potential due to this really, really, cool kid who tried to start a fight with my friend. Honestly though…who moshes at a pop rock show? Really, really cool kids I suppose.

Gym Class Heroes were on the main stage right after Anberlin, so I had a perfect spot for one of my all-time-favorite live acts! Even though they only played two short excerpts from their first (and my favorite) album, The Papercut Chronicles, I still thoroughly enjoyed their performance. What really strikes me about Gym Class Heroes is how happy they are to be playing. Each member boasts a huge smile through out their entire set. They don’t try to look cool, and they don’t try to have good stage presence. They simply play and have a blast while doing so. If you ask me, that is what makes good stage presence!

After paying way too much for water, watching a scenester do a rubix cube in less than a minute, and looking down to notice that the sun left a burn in the shape of a v in my chest, I moseyed on over to the Smart Punk stage to see some quality metalcore from August Burns Red. Since I had only heard the music on their myspace, I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be familiar with the songs they played. To my surprise, I knew four out of the five songs in their set! That’s what is great about warped tour. The sets are only 30 minutes long, so the bands showcase their most popular music in order to please everybody.

With the breakdown from ABR’s “Barbarian” still rocking in my head, I ran towards the main stage to see Paramore. After working our way to the very front of the stage, my friends and I realized our position was surrounded by teeny-bopper scenesters. If three crowd surfers land above our heads, arms and legs flailing, who is going to have the upper body strength to support them? Three 6’2” 19-year-old guys, or ten 5’5” 13-year-old, gender anonymous, kids? Needless to say, we decided to move back a little bit the middle of the crowd. This was my second time to see Paramore, and they still blew my mind. Lead singer Hayley William’s voice is even more powerful live than on CD. If you are planning on going to any shows this year, make sure Paramore is on that list! It was a perfect way to end the day.

There are a few things you expect to happen when going to a music festival: Overpriced $4 dollar waters, a sunburn in the shape of your favorite t-shirt (maybe even your favorite shorty-shorts as well), having two of your favorite bands scheduled to play at the same time,
