Bone Marrow Registration Drive on campus on LSU game day!
On Saturday, October 20, the TAMU Cancer Society, American Childhood Cancer Organization, and Future Aggie Nurses will be hosting a Bone Marrow Drive 4 hours before the LSU football game. The drive will be held near Rudder Fountain between the Memorial Student Center and Rudder Tower.
Registering is free and easy! All if takes is a little bit of paperwork and a simple cheek swab. Normally, only 1 in 200 people are found to actually be a match. You will stay in the bone marrow registry until age 65.
Most people think it is very painful, but it's not! 85% of the time the donation process is much like donating blood or plasma and blood stem cells are filtered out. About 15% of the time, marrow cells are collected from the backside of the pelvic bone (not the spine) using a special syringe. Donors receive general anesthesia so no pain is experienced during the marrow extraction.
